And this book set in the same world isn't one, exactly. The Greendale Public Library's Greendale Reads title this month was The Year of the Flood (2009) by Margaret Atwood. Then, two weeks later, I read The Year of the Flood. Then, waited nearly 2 years to read Oryx and Crake because I'm mental. Twenty years ago, America's Midwest was under water. The Year of the Flood is set in the same world and has ties to Atwood's earlier book, Oryx and Crake. Because I'm stupid, my Atwood history goes: Read The Handmaid's Tale and LOVED it. Farmers' Almanac looks back at this devastating flood. I have such a hard time finding a follow up book after Atwood. Margaret Atwood's The Year of the Flood is a difficult and disturbing book. The Year of the Flood is Margaret Atwood's follow-up to Oryx and Crake, although the action takes place in the same world simultaneously, so you don't need to have read that one to enjoy this one. To prepare for the flood, they learn survival skills and build secret caches of food and other supplies they call Ararats in various places. Margaret Atwood's spectacular 2003 novel Oryx And Crake didn't really need a sequel. I don't know exactly why it took me so long to get around to opening the first few pages. I have been meaning to read Margaret Atwood's latest novel The Year of The Flood for ages. I finished The Flood about 1 hour ago and she has left me wanting more. The Year of the Flood follows two survivors of “The Waterless Flood,” a global pandemic that has wiped out most, if not all, of humanity. The Year of the Flood is labeled as the second book of the MadAddam trilogy on Goodreads, which is quite misleading, and yet accurate. After reading that book I just had to read its – not sequel, exactly, but companion piece – The Year of the Flood.
